Pundit claims Mourinho ‘will definitely get rid’ of player who has started last two games

Gabriel Agbonlahor has claimed that Jose Mourinho will get rid of Erik Lamela during the summer transfer window if he is given the money to spend on new signings.

Some may have felt at the start of the season that Lamela’s days at Tottenham could be numbered after several players arrived through the door at Spurs in the summer.

However, the Argentine has still continued to get plenty of game time this season, arguably because the likes of Gareth Bale have not lived up to expectations.

The 28-year-old has been used regularly by Mourinho since returning from injury, with the Spurs boss handing the former Roma man starts against West Brom on Sunday as well as against Everton on Wednesday.

The attacking midfielder earned Mourinho’s praise for his performance against the Baggies and got on the scoresheet at Goodison Park even though it ultimately turned out to be in a losing cause.

However, Agbonlahor believes that Mourinho is only having to use Lamela due to the lack of options at his disposal.

When asked whether the Argentina international has a future at Spurs, the former Aston Villa striker told Football Insider: “No, not at all.

“He’s not the same player he used to be, Lamela.

“When I watch him now, he doesn’t really get past anyone, he doesn’t score or assist.

“I think Jose Mourinho is just playing him because he’s annoyed at Gareth Bale. He’s just playing Lamela because he’s got nobody else to play.

“If Jose Mourinho is given a bit of money he will definitely get rid of Lamela.

“I think he’ll keep Moura because he’s a good squad player and he does OK when he plays.

“Someone like Lamela will be gone for sure. He’s not really lived up to expectations.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Lamela has never really been one to beat players or get too many goals or assists since arriving at Tottenham almost eight years ago.

However, he has proven to be a vital cog in the wheel when fit as he provides the side with plenty of energy and is capable of dragging the opponents out of position.

I suspect Lamela might survive at Spurs for one more season because Mourinho seems to love his attitude which is not surprising considering that the Argentine always gives everything whether he starts or comes on from the bench.
