Pundit claims one Spurs star should never play for the club again

Gabby Agbonlahor believes Davinson Sanchez should never play for Tottenham again after the performance that he produced against Bournemouth.

Ahead of the clash at the Vitaly Stadium, Antonio Conte had remarked that the Champions League match against Marseille on Tuesday was more important for Spurs than the one against the Cherries (Football.London).

So, it was perhaps not a surprise to see a makeshift backline starting the game, with the Italian naming a back three of Sanchez, Clement Lenglet and Ben Davies.

Tottenham were all over the place defensively in the first half and struggled to cope with the physicality of Bournemouth’s forwards.

Conte’s men looked a lot more solid in the second half and were able to win the majority of the second balls once Eric Dier replaced Sanchez at right centre-back.

Agbonlahor has now questioned the Spurs boss’ decision to start the Colombian, and also did not hold back in his criticism of Emerson Royal.

The former Aston Villa striker told talkSPORT: “The other thing is Davinson Sanchez – I wouldn’t play him again. I would not play him again for Spurs.

“The combination of Sanchez and Emerson Royal on the right-hand side is dreadful, let’s be honest. Why can’t Spurs get up for games in the first half?”

The one explanation I can give for Conte’s continued trust in Sanchez and Emerson is that the Italian seems to value players’ mentality and engine as much as he does their actual ability.

Both Sanchez and Emerson are clearly team players who will always give 100 per cent for the cause. However, I am afraid that there has been more than enough evidence to suggest that neither of them are suited to the position they are tasked with playing.

Emerson’s inability to cross or beat a man makes him a poor fit for the right wing-back role while Sanchez is not good enough on the ball to play as a right-sided centre-back.
