Pundit claims PL star may have decided he would love to play under Conte

Kevin Phillips has claimed Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger would be a ‘massive signing; for Tottenham as a part of the club’s rebuild.

The Germany international has entered the final six months of his contract at Stamford Bridge and is currently at a standstill with the club over signing fresh terms.

Tottenham have been rumoured to be keeping tabs on Rudiger’s situation on a regular basis, with Antonio Conte’s side keen to secure a free transfer heading into next season.

The club’s managing director of footballl Fabio Paratici is said to be in regular contact with the central defender’s representatives and is looking to beat the likes of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich to his signature.

While former Premier League striker Phillips believes Rudiger switching West for North London would be a downgrade in his career, he feels the move would be hugely beneficial in Tottenham’s rebuild under Conte.

He told Football Insider: “I just wonder why he would want to leave Chelsea and go to Tottenham.

“Especially with everything he has achieved at Chelsea, and what they could still achieve. Could Tottenham really get up there and challenge in that top two? I don’t think so.

“They’re heading in the right direction. If they were to pull it off, I think Conte would have a lot to do with it.

“Rudiger may well have seen his antics on the touchline and his track record and decided he would love to play under someone like that.

“If they can get him through the door as part of this rebuild then, wow, it would be a massive signing for them.”

Rudiger will be one of the most attractive players to sign this month and Spurs’ interest seems pretty strong. Obviously, it will be a tricky deal to complete with the links to Chelsea, but he would be a good acquisition for Conte given he can slow into the back three.
