Pundit claims potential £77m player would be a good fit for Spurs following transfer rumour

Former Premier League forward Noel Whelan has claimed that Barcelona midfielder Philippe Coutinho will be a perfect signing for Tottenham.

Coutinho, who is currently on a season-long loan at Bayern Munich, is reportedly to be available for a fee of £77 million in the summer according to the Express .

It is suggested that Barcelona are keen to sell the 27-year-old and that Bayern Munich will not be signing him permanently after his loan spell.

Although Coutinho has notched up six goals and provided six assists in eighteen league appearances in the Bundesliga so far (transfermarket), he has fallen out of favour recently at the Allianz Arena.

Tottenham will reportedly have to contend with some considerable competition for the Brazilian international with Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City also said to be keen on landing him but Whelan has urged the Lilywhites to do all they can to snap up the former Liverpool star.

Speaking to Football Insider, Mills said: “I think he’d be perfect for Tottenham’s style of play. Perfect for Harry Kane as well.

“I think they need somebody like that – I know they’ve got Giovani Lo Celso in there but I think that Coutinho-type player, somebody who can see that pass, someone with that quality from set-pieces.

“We saw what he did at Liverpool. He was extraordinary when he was there, and I think he would really fit Tottenham very well.

“If they can get that one over the line – I know he’s out of favour at Bayern Munich – with the players that would be around him at Tottenham, he could really thrive. That kind of signing excites me.”

Spurs Web Opinion

While Coutinho would be a good replacement for Christian Eriksen, I am not sure he is worth the price being suggested. I believe we will continue to sign younger players with value for the future. I just can’t see us shelling out £77 million for someone who will be 28 this summer.
