Pundit claims rumoured Spurs left-back target reminds him of Ashley Cole

Former Crystal Palace midfielder John Salako has claimed that Tottenham target Tyrick Mitchell reminds him of Ashley Cole.

Mitchell’s consistent displays for Palace earned the youngster a call up to the England squad and the youngster was handed his first start for the Three Lions in their 3-0 win over Ivory Coast on Tuesday.

Antonio Conte is reportedly looking to upgrade at left wing-back this summer, with the Spurs boss said to be unconvinced by Sergio Reguilon (Football Insider).

Mitchell is thought to be one of the options on the North Londoners’ radar, with the Lilywhites set to face competition from the likes of Manchester City, Newcastle United and Chelsea for the 22-year-old this summer (The Sun).

Salako is certainly convinced that Mitchell is destined to reach the very top, with the former Palace midfielder comparing the youngster’s defensive attributes to that of Chelsea and England legend Ashley Cole.

The pundit told talkSPORT (28/03/22): “There is an opportunity for Tyrick Mitchell (to play at left-back for England going forward). Defensively he is awesome. He reminds me of Ashley Cole defensively.

“What I would say to Tyrick when he played left wing-back, ‘go and take people on’. I know he put that cross in for Kane. But fantastic for the (Palace) boys.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Mitchell has not shown enough going forward to suggest that he can be a potent wing-back, which is why I do not think he would be at the top of Tottenham’s wishlist this summer. I suspect Conte would prefer to sign a left-winger and improve the defensive side of his game rather than teaching a full-back how to be more decisive in the final third.
