Pundit claims rumoured Spurs target would be an upgrade on Hojbjerg

Kevin Phillips has urged Tottenham Hotspur to snap up Youri Tielemans, insisting the Leicester star would be an upgrade over Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Tielemans’s future is up in the air as he will have just one year left on his contract with the Foxes at the end of the season (Transfermarkt) and the midfielder has admitted he is ready to make a step up to a ‘top European club’ (talkSPORT).

GiveMeSport claimed last week that Spurs plan to make a move for Tielemans in the summer should they qualify for the Champions League.

Fabrizio Romano revealed on a recent episode of the Here We Go podcast (19/04/22) that the Belgian international will leave Leicester at the end of the season but added that five or six clubs, including Spurs, were competing for his signature.

However, according to The Telegraph, some at Tottenham have reservations over a move for the 24-year-old.

Phillips believes that signing the Leicester star should be a no-brainer for Spurs, given the quality he possesses.

The former Sunderland striker told Football Insider about Tottenham’s alleged interest in Tielemans: “He’d be a real upgrade on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, I think Tielemans is a fantastic player.

“That’s not knocking Hojbjerg – he’s done really well since coming into Tottenham. But with Tielemans, he’s just that extra level above in terms of creativity and quality on the ball.

“You could also play those two together. Hojbjerg can break up the play really well while Tielemans can provide that spark from midfield. If they can get him – because I know Man United and Arsenal are interested – it would be a great signing.”

Tielemans’ skill set is limited but in reality, a midfielder in Conte’s system does not need to have outstanding attributes.

They only need a good engine and tactical acumen, both of which the midfielder possesses while also having more creativity than our current central midfield options.

I certainly think that the Belgian would be a decent upgrade on Harry Winks should the 26-year-old leave this summer.
