Pundit claims Spurs cannot wait until summer if they want managerial target

Former Newcastle goalkeeper Shaka Hislop has called on the Tottenham board to act immediately if they want to appoint Julian Nagelsmann as their next head coach.

Since the news of Bayern Munich’s sacking of Nagelsmann emerged last week, multiple outlets suggested that the German almost immediately shot up near the top of Tottenham’s wishlist, with the North Londoners backed to reach out to the former RB Leipzig boss (Football Insider).

The Telegraph reported on Friday that the Lilywhites tried to appoint the 35-year-old to replace Jose Mourinho back in 2021 and also revealed that the recently departed Bayern boss has a soft spot for Spurs.

However, Bild revealed over the weekend that since Nagelsmann has vbeen put on gardening leave for now, Tottenham would have to pay significant compensation to Bayern to the tune of €20m (£17.5m) if they appoint him before the end of the season.

Hislop believes that the Premier League club simply cannot afford to wait until the summer, insisting that the German is the perfect fit for the job.

The pundit told ESPN FC (as relayed by HITC): “I totally agree that Naglesmann is a great fit. If you can figure that out, then it’s better for Spurs. If I am a Spurs fan, then I am doing everything I can to persuade Daniel Levy to do as much. Spurs are in a race for the top four right now.

“Again, if I am Nagelesmann, I am saying ‘let’s wait until the end of the season, sorting out my business with Bayern Munich, then figuring out what my next steps will be.’ But, if you are Spurs, you might not have until the end of the season.”

Realistically, Nagelesmann will not want to take any job before the summer as he would want to wait and assess the offers that come his way.

Tottenham would have almost certainly reached out to the German before they made the decision to hand the job to Stellini until the end of the season.
