Pundit claims Spurs could ‘cash in’ on 28-year-old next summer

Former Sunderland striker, Kevin Phillips believes that this may be Erik Lamela’s final season at Tottenham, with the club potentially set to cash in on the attacking midfielder next summer.

The Argentine’s days in North London appeared to be numbered after the club re-signed Gareth Bale on loan during the last transfer window.

Despite Tottenham having an embarrassment of riches in the wide areas, as well as attacking midfield, the former Roma man has still been handed plenty of game time so far this campaign.

He seemed to be one of Mourinho’s most trusted options before picking up an injury ahead of the most recent international break.

The 28-year-old seems to personify the type of mentality that the Portuguese coach wants to build among the Spurs squad as he always works hard, makes an impact when he comes off the bench and does not mind engaging in the dark arts if it helps his side to win.

However, Phillips believes that Tottenham are unlikely to offer Lamela a new contract and could look to cash-in on him at the end of the season.

When asked about the Argentine’s future, the pundit told Football Insider: “Personally, I think they will look to cash in on Lamela next year. As good as a player he is, he is frustrating.

“One week he can be fantastic and the next week he is totally different.

“He works his socks off but if Mourinho can free up some room on the wage bill to invest somewhere else I would imagine they would look to do that.

“It would not surprise me if Lamela was moved on in the summer, a year before his contract is due to expire. I think he would like to cash in on that one, to be honest.”
