Pundit claims Spurs could challenge Man City and Liverpool as early as next season

Noel Whelan believes that Tottenham Hotspur could challenge Manchester City and Liverpool next season if Antonio Conte is backed in the transfer window.

Conte hinted last week that Spurs could replicate the success that Jurgen Klopp has had at Anfield but only with the necessary time and resources to do so (Football.London).

Fichajes.net reported earlier this month that the Italian wants to challenge for major honours as early as next season and has made specific player requests to the Spurs hierarchy that would allow him to do so.

According to The Telegraph, Conte wants to make as many as six new signings during this summer’s transfer window.

Whelan has insisted that challenging the top two is a realistic target for Tottenham next season, given the quality they already have in their squad.

The pundit pointed to the signings of Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski in January as evidence that Conte is capable of identifying the right sort of player to improve Spurs.

The former Coventry City forward told Football Insider: “There’s no doubt they can challenge those top two clubs with the right business this summer.

“Look at that front three. Look at the players sitting on the bench – they’ve got serious quality.

“They can compete, for sure. They’ve added two top players from Juventus in Kulusevski and Bentancur. That’s just proof of Conte’s influence.

“They need to go further now. He wants these funds to really stamp his authority on this Tottenham side. If he does that, it could be exciting, huge.

“On their day, they can really compete with Man City and Liverpool – and we’ve seen that this season.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I am not sure we can get more than 90 points next season, which is what we would need to do to compete with City and Liverpool. However, we can certainly aspire for a third-place finish and a domestic cup.

Manchester United are in transition while Chelsea have also floundered under Tuchel and needs to rebuild their squad. Arsenal’s squad is inexperienced and might not be able to compete on multiple fronts.

So, the opportunity is certainly there for Spurs to cement their place as the best of the rest next season as long as we make some smart additions this summer.
