Pundit claims Spurs could hold Newcastle ‘to ransom’ for ‘unbelievable player’

Former Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur could demand top dollar from Newcastle United for Harry Winks.

Winks struggled for game time for the majority of last season under Jose Mourinho and he was linked with a move away from Spurs during the summer transfer window.

The 25-year-old ended up staying put in North London but he has struggled to force himself into Nuno Espirito Santo’s starting eleven, having started just one Premier League game so far this campaign.

According to reports, Winks has admirers in both Spain and Italy and the midfielder is also thought to be on Newcastle United’s radar following the club’s Saudi-led takeover.

The midfielder gave an interview to Football.London last week in which he stated that he loved Tottenham but admitted he is keen to get regular game time under his belt.

Kenny has now praised the England international as an ‘unbelievable player’ and suggested that Newcastle might have to pay a large fee to snap him up.

The pundit told Football Insider: “If they (Tottenham) are going to get top dollar from anyone (for Winks), then it would be Newcastle.

“They will be really worried about being held to ransom, I’m sure about that. But Spurs won’t care, they’ll be happy to do that.

“He is one of those players who haven’t played regularly recently. But when he’s on form, he’s an unbelievable player.

“But I don’t think he is going to get that game time at Tottenham. Would Newcastle be the right place for him to go? I think so.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I am not sure any club would be prepared to pay over £20m for Winks at the moment. I am not sure whether Spurs will be prepared to sell him in January unless they sign another midfielder, particular due to their involvement in the Conference League. The 25-year-old might have to wait until next summer to leave the club.
