Pundit claims Spurs could replace Harry Kane with 25-year-old PL player

Noel Whelan believes that Manchester United striker Anthony Martial is capable of filling Harry Kane’s shoes at Tottenham if the England captain is to depart.

Kane has looked short of sharpness so far this season after his proposed move to Manchester City fell through during the summer transfer window.

The striker is yet to open his account in the Premier League this campaign and has been on the receiving end of plenty of criticism for his sub-standard displays.

However, the 28-year-old did serve a timely reminder on Thursday of what he has capable of as he came off the bench against NS Mura in the second half to score a hat-trick and help his side to a 5-1 win.

Tottenham will be hoping that the hat-trick kickstarts Kane’s season and some reports over recent weeks have indicated that the striker could be open to signing a new contract in North London.

However, should the England captain leave in January or next summer, Whelan believes Spurs could replace him with Martial.

The former Coventry City forward claimed the Manchester United man needs a fresh start to resurrect his career.

When asked about Martial, Whelan told Football Insider: “Look at Lingard going to West Ham last year.

“That’s an example of how these sorts of signings can work. He’s still young enough, but he’s a player who desperately needs a fresh start.

“Just like Lingard, he needs to get away from Man United to reignite his career and show people what he’s all about regularly.

“Sometimes you need that new lease of life, and at the moment there’s no benefit to him staying at Manchester United.

“If United are to offload him, he could very well be the replacement that Spurs want if Harry Kane moves on.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Martial’s talent is certainly not in question but the 25-year-old has not been able to deliver with any sort of consistency during his time at Old Trafford. There are question marks over whether the Frenchman has the requisite desire to fulfil his potential. I would personally not take the gamble on Martial unless he is available for around or less than £30m.
