Pundit claims Spurs have gone backwards under Mourinho; describes Levy as a ‘misery’

Former Chelsea and Blackburn Rovers striker Chris Sutton has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur have gone backwards under Jose Mourinho.

Former manager Mauricio Pochettino helped to transform the North London side having guided them to four successive top four finishes during his five and a half year spell which also included an appearance in the final of last season’s Champions League.

The Argentine was axed by chairman Daniel Levy in late November following a poor start to the season which saw Spurs drop to fourteenth in the Premier League table along with suffering humiliation in cup competition at the hands of Colchester United and Bayern Munich.

Despite seeing an upturn in form following Mourinho’s arrival in late November, Spurs have struggled in recent weeks which has seen the side slip down to eighth in the league standings along with any hopes of silverware ending in the space of a week with defeats in the FA Cup and Champions League.

After the 3-0 defeat to RB Leipzig on Tuesday evening in a match in which Spurs rarely threatened their German hosts, Sutton suggested that Mauricio Pochettino would have got more out of his team.

He told BT Sport’s UEFA Champions League highlights show (11/03/2020 at 11pm): “Would they have performed like this under Pochettino? I’m not sure they would have,”

“It is worrying, worrying times for Spurs – now eighth in the Premier League.

“Dele Alli’s comments about the mentality were extraordinary and it speaks volumes. They’ve gone backwards under Mourinho, he’s getting his excuses out now – and he will want Levy to spend a fortune in the summer. He’s a misery.”
