Pundit claims Spurs have to show purpose to hold onto integral star

Tottenham Hotspur must do everything in their power to keep Harry Kane at the club this summer former Leeds United forward Noel Whelan has stressed.

Kane recently held a live Instagram interview with Jamie Redknapp where the Spurs forward stated his desire to be one of the world’s best players and said he would not remain with Spurs if he did not feel he could achieve what he wants to at the club (Sky Sports).

The Express claimed last week that Manchester City and Real Madrid are set to battle it out for the 27-year-old in the summer with a £150million transfer fee having been mentioned to try and tempt Daniel Levy to part company with his star man.

Whelan believes that while a move to Madrid would be tempting for any player, Spurs cannot afford to allow the prolific marksman to depart North London in what would be a huge void left in Jose Mourinho’s side.

He told Football Insider: “They’ve got to try and show some purpose to keep him [Kane].

“He’s the one of the best strikers in the world, and I think the fans would want Spurs to do all they can to keep him, because he’s integral.

“He’s their captain, he’s their leader, he’s their goalscorer, and you can’t replace a Harry Kane. What do you go and get in place of him? That is the problem – there would be a huge void left if he does leave.

“Would it be tempting for Kane? Of course it would – who wouldn’t want to go and play for Real Madrid? He wants to win things, and he’s definitely going to do that if he goes to Real Madrid.

“Everybody needs a superstar, and he definitely is one of those players.”
