Pundit claims Spurs man has ‘probably played his last game’ for his country

Kevin Phillips has suggested that Eric Dier has probably played his last game for England after the Tottenham defender was omitted from the latest Three Lions squad.

Dier has won 45 caps for England and has represented the country in the European Championship in 2016 as well as the World Cup in 2018 (Transfermarkt). However, the Tottenham man has not been called up to the Three Lions squad in more than a year.

The 28-year-old would have felt that he had a good chance of earning a recall this time around after the impressive season he has had at club level.

However, Southgate once again chose to omit the former Sporting Lisbon man and instead decided to call up the likes of Crystal Palace youngster Marc Guehi.

Despite being left out, Dier has insisted this is the best season he has had for the Lilywhites in terms of consistency, adding that his football ‘is the best it has been’ (The Athletic).

However, Phillips believes the Tottenham man will struggle to get back into the fold, given the young players coming through the England set-up.

The former Sunderland striker told Football Insider about Dier: “I think he’s probably played his last game for England. It will be difficult for him to get back into the squad even though he’s playing well for Tottenham.

“Gareth likes to bring the youth through and the kid from Palace is an exciting young player. He has had a really good season and deserves his call-up.

“Dier has a lot of England caps to his name. You can never say never but it’s looking very unlikely. I think Southgate will go down a different route.

“All Dier can do is play well for his club and hope that he gets back into the squad at some point. I’m pretty sure Southgate will be looking elsewhere though.”

Southgate is well within his rights to try out the likes of Marc Guehi to see what they can offer. However, the fact that the England boss has called up the likes of Harry Maguire, Conor Coady and Tyrone Mings, who have all had worse seasons than Dier, will probably irk the Tottenham man.
