Pundit claims Spurs midfielder exit could be ‘best for all parties’ this summer

Former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips has claimed that Harry Winks’ potential Tottenham departure is the best move for all parties this summer (Football Insider).

Football Insider also revealed recently that Winks is in talks to join a Premier League club after being told he will only be a fringe player in the upcoming season.

New manager Nuno Espirito Santo has reportedly given the green light for the 25-year-old to leave this summer.

The Telegraph stated on June 30 that Aston Villa were monitoring Winks’ situation this transfer window.

Winks struggled to push himself into Tottenham’s first-team last year, especially under the previous manager Jose Mourinho.

The 25-year-old made just 15 appearances in the Premier League last time out, only being in the starting XI for nine of them (Transfermarkt).

If reports are to be believed, the situation does not appear to be changing for the upcoming season and Winks could thus be heading down the exit door.

Phillips has suggested that this may not be the worst thing. He said: “Talking to another club? I think that’s fair enough.

“Instead of the manager coming in and stringing him along it’s a clean break. I actually like Harry; I think he’s a quality player. He will do well for any side.

“Nuno has clearly made it clear that he’s not in his plans and there’s nothing he can do as a player after that.

“Obviously, the deal will have to suit Tottenham, they won’t let him go for nothing.

“It’s best for all parties, the last thing he wants is to sit on the bench next year.

“He’s not a boy anymore, he needs that regular football and if he can’t get it at Tottenham then it’s time to go.”

I think most would agree with Phillips’ comments. It would make sense to sell Winks for both parties. At 25, Winks will want first-team football. But, for Spurs, he is English and could re-coup a decent fee.
