Pundit claims Spurs ‘need to start looking’ at replacing star player

Noel Whelan has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur need to look for Hugo Lloris’ long-term replacement irrespective of whether the goalkeeper stays at the club next season.

There have been contradictory reports regarding Lloris’ future, with some sources suggesting that the Frenchman could return to Ligue 1 this summer while others have claimed that he is set to sign a contract extension with Spurs.

A potential reunion with Jose Mourinho at AS Roma has also been mooted as a possibility by the Italian press.

Meanwhile, Tottenham continue to be linked with moves for goalkeepers, which potentially suggests that they expect their captain to leave.

Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale is rumoured to be one of the names on Spurs’ radar and Whelan believes that the 23-year-old would be a smart capture.

The former Leeds United striker insisted that Ramsdale could benefit from serving as Lloris’ understudy for a season and learning from the Spurs captain.

When asked about the speculation suggesting that Tottenham could replace Lloris with Ramsdale, Whelan told Football Insider: “We knew the situation with Hugo Lloris, we knew that he was coming to the end of his contract.

“We knew that he was going to see that through and then probably go back to France. So they need to start looking and putting things in place.

“Sometimes it takes a new player a season to bed in. A season of working alongside Lloris will be beneficial for Ramsdale.

“That’s one side of things they might actually get right this summer but they’ve still got to get that signing through the door.

“It’s a tempting prospect. Who wouldn’t want to play for Tottenham? This one is an easier signing because he’s coming from the Championship.

“He’s going to step into the shoes of Hugo Lloris but I doubt he’d be the number one straight away. But he’s a fantastic keeper and what a man to learn from.”
