Pundit claims Spurs should have hired 46-year-old manager over Nuno

Don Hutchison believes Tottenham should have appointed Graham Potter as their new manager over the summer instead of Nuno Espirito Santo.

Spurs were in the hunt for a new face in the dugout for a lengthy amount of time after relieving Jose Mourinho of his duties and eventually landed at the door of former Wolves man Nuno.

The Portuguese coach hit the ground running at the club, winning his first three Premier League games, but has since been feeling a bit of pressure after losing the next two 3-0 to London rivals Crystal Palace and Chelsea.

Spurs went through a host of managerial candidates during the summer before eventually deciding Nuno was the right man for the side, and came across Brighton boss Potter in the process.

The English manager pledged his immediate allegiance to the Seagulls despite links with the North London hot seat.

Former Premier League midfielder Hutchison believes Levy should have pushed harder to appoint Potter this summer, and added that Spurs’ rivals Arsenal should have also had a look at the Brighton man amid their uncertainties with Mikel Arteta.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport (20/09/21): “I think he is the manager Tottenham or Arsenal should have went for, Graham Potter. I see a terrific coach.

“I see him working on the training ground every day improving players. He has forward players, he does the work and they play great football.

“They out-possessed Man City and Guardiola, which was last season that not many teams do.

“I see a coach who can go to a top-six side. I am not trying to get him away from Brighton, right now.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Potter has been working wonders with Brighton and at the moment, he is doing better than both Nuno and Arteta. He is a pragmatic manager who gets his teams playing football and he has excelled at sides without a massive budget. For now we need to back Nuno to see if he can get things moving in the right direction.
