Pundit claims Spurs youngster would ‘look much better’ playing with Kane and Moura

Pat Nevin has suggested Tottenham winger Bryan Gil would ‘look much better’ playing alongside the likes of Harry Kane and Lucas Moura.

The 20-year-old, who joined Tottenham for £22 million in the summer, was handed a start by Antonio Conte in the side’s 3-1 win over League One side Morecambe in the FA Cup on Sunday.

The line-up was a heavily rotated one and the performance reflected that when Spurs went into half-time looking to erase a shock lead from the Shrimpers.

With Spurs still trailing beyond the hour mark, Conte made a triple change to alter the game’s dynamic with Gil sacrificed along with Tanguy Ndombele and Dele Alli.

Substitutes Kane and Moura eventually spared Spurs’ blushes by following up a freak Harry Winks equaliser to send the side through to the next round.

However, while most of the focus was on a poor team performance as a whole from Spurs, Gil’s display on the ball was somewhat overlooked.

As such, Nevin believes the Spaniard put in a positive shift overall and would have benefited even more from playing with teammates of better quality.

He said on BBC Radio 5 Live (09/01/22): “I thought Gil looked good. He didn’t score and when he went off it got better.

“If he had been on the pitch with Kane and Moura he would have looked much better.”

Gil actually produced a rather tidy display and that would have been a bit tricky to do with the performance of the team as a whole against Morecambe. The team was largely second-string but he showed that he has obvious quality that hasn’t been tapped into that much so far.
