Pundit claims striker would be a ‘great fit’ to replace Kane at Spurs if he leaves

Paul Robinson has named Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku as someone Tottenham should target to replace Harry Kane if he leaves the club this summer.

Kane, 28, is again likely to be on the radar of plenty of top clubs at the end of the campaign, having failed to secure an exit from North London last year (The Guardian).

His form in 2022 under Spurs head coach Antonio Conte has again proved why he is one of the best in the world in his position, but also why chairman Daniel Levy will likely want to keep hold of him.

The Telegraph reported earlier this week that Manchester United have set aside ‘substantial funds’ for imminent arriving manager Erik ten Hag to use, with Kane noted as one name on their shortlist.

And should Spurs be tempted, or even forced into a sale of the England captain, Robinson believes his former employers should consider a move for unsettled Chelsea man Lukaku as a direct replacement, claiming he would be a ‘great fit’ for the side.

However, the former goalkeeper treaded carefully with his suggestion by admitting a deal for the Belgium international would be a ‘difficult’ one to complete given the relationship between Spurs and Chelsea.

Robinson told Football Insider: “If Kane was to go they should consider it. The main aim should be to keep Kane at the club though. He’s playing so well at the moment. He is vital.

“I am not confident that he will stay. I don’t think his ambitions have changed. He wants major honours. Yes, he is enjoying his football and his relationship with Conte is great I just cannot see him wanting to stay.

“It is going to take two or three transfer windows for Spurs to get to a stage where they are challenging. When you look at Kane’s age, time is ticking.

“If he was in that Man City team he’d have 30 goals this season with the chance to win the Premier League and Champions League.

“If he leaves, Lukaku would be a great fit. It would be hard to do though as Spurs and Chelsea don’t do business. It would be a difficult deal to do.”

Lukaku enjoyed two seasons under Conte at Inter Milan, with his second campaign yielding 24 goals en route to securing the Serie A title (Transfermarkt).

He has struggled since returning to Chelsea after securing a £97.5 million transfer in the summer (Sky Sports) and has seen opportunities come sporadically under Thomas Tuchel.

Spurs should not even consider letting Kane leave and then replacing him for Lukaku as the difference between them is huge. While Lukaku on his day can be an excellent striker, he is so much more limited than Kane which makes potentially replacing him even more difficult.
