Jermaine Pennant believes that it would be a no-brainer for Tottenham to pursue Ivan Toney if Harry Kane leaves the club this summer.
Kane will enter the final year of his contract at Tottenham this June and reports over recent weeks indicate that the striker will not negotiate a new deal with the North London club until they have a new head coach in place (Football Insider).
The 29-year-old is thought to be Manchester United‘s top target ahead of the summer transfer window (Daily Star) and should he decide against signing a new deal at Spurs, the Lilywhites hierarchy would have a decision to make as they would be risking letting him leave on a free next year.
It was suggested by Football Insider back in February that should Tottenham lose the England captain, they could make a move for Toney, who they were alleged to be keeping a close eye on ahead of the summer transfer window.
Pennant believes that the Bees star is as close to a Kane replacement as Spurs can get his summer.
The former Liverpool winger told talkSPORT: “If you look at the best stats for an English striker, he is just shy behind Harry Kane.

“He is England’s number two. He’s similar to Harry Kane himself.
“If Kane was to leave in the summer, then I think a perfect fit would be Ivan Toney, without a shadow of a doubt.”

There is no doubt in my mind that Toney would be the obvious player to turn to if Kane does leave this summer.
However, the Brentford star would certainly not come cheap and he is likely to have a few options to choose from.
It remains to be seen if Spurs would be an attractive enough destination for him, particularly if we do not have European football to offer.
