Pundit claims striker would snub West Ham in favour of Spurs move

Former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips believes it will be a no-brainer for Olivier Giroud to prefer a move to Tottenham Hotspur over joining West Ham in the summer.

The French international was heavily linked with a move to Spurs in January (Daily Mail) but ended up staying put at Stamford Bridge.

The striker is expected to depart the Blues in the summer with Frank Lampard’s side on the verge of sealing a deal to sign RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner.

Despite Chelsea taking up an option to extend the former Arsenal man’s contract by a year, reports indicate that the club are open to selling him in the summer (Football.London).

The Express report that Tottenham will return for the 33-year-old’s services but face competition from West Ham for the striker’s signature.

Phillips has questioned why Giroud would want to join the Hammers over Spurs given that David Moyes’ side are typically always battling against relegation.

Speaking to Football Insider, the former Golden Boot winner said: “I do not think he would be tempted by a move to West Ham.

“We do not know what league West Ham are going to be in yet. If they do survive you would presume they will be scrapping relegation again next year.

“Having come from a side like Chelsea, does he want that? At Tottenham he could be challenging for a European spot. I know where I would rather be.

“Yes, you want to play week in, week out but Harry has had his injury problems at Spurs. He has been injured every season for the last two or three.

“Tottenham have the new stadium as well which is a pull. Players would love to play in that stadium.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not believe it is Harry Kane’s presence at Spurs that would stop Giroud from coming to the Lilywhites. At his age, one would presume that he would be happy to be a squad player as long as he gets game time. However, I doubt Chelsea would be open to selling the France international to us.
