Pundit claims Tottenham defender is not good enough for Newcastle to ‘mess around with’

Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed Tottenham defender Joe Rodon is not good enough for Newcastle if they want to increase their chances of Premier League survival this season.

The 24-year-old has found game time difficult to come by since completing an £11 million move to Spurs in October 2020.

Rodon has made just six appearances in all competitions this term, while he is yet to make a Premier League start under the guidance of Antonio Conte.

As such, the Wales international has been tipped to head towards the exit at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in January, with relegation candidates Newcastle said to be a possible destination.

The Magpies have claimed just one win at the halfway point this season and have conceded the joint-highest number of goals in the division with 42.

However, former Aston Villa striker Agbonlahor is not convinced Eddie Howe’s side should push through a move for Rodon as he is unconvinced whether the Welshman would actually improve Newcastle’s chances of survival.

He told Football Insider: “I don’t understand this. If Newcastle are going to bring in anybody they’ve got to be better than what they’ve got.

“Rodon is no better than Schar or Lascelles. They don’t need him.

“They need to go out and buy players who are going to guarantee them survival. They can’t mess around with players like Rodon.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Rodon definitely has the ability to be a very good defender and a loan to a lower end Premier League club should be the best move for both him and Spurs. Newcastle do need to bolster their defensive line and Rodon isn’t getting many chances at Spurs at the moment, so it could be a transfer to look out for.
