Micah Richards has revealed he is confused by the poor recent form of Tottenham defensive pair Cristian Romero and Davinson Sanchez.
Spurs will be seeking to put a difficult week behind them which saw them lose ground in the race for fourth place in the Premier League.
Antonio Conte’s side suffered defeats at home to Southampton and Wolves, with the performances in both fixtures falling short of a side chasing for a Champions League spot.
Spurs were second best against Bruno Lage’s Wolves for the majority of the 2-0 encounter, with goals from two early defensive errors proving to be the difference.
South American pair Romero and Sanchez played in both fixtures last week and Richards believes their unconvincing showings was just one of the reasons behind Tottenham’s drop in form.
He told BBC’s Football Daily podcast: “The senior players are not playing well. Romero and Sanchez, I’m confused. These are good players, or at least they were good players. I don’t understand.
“You can’t say they’re top players because the Premier League is a difficult league, but they were good players.
“He’s (Sanchez) struggling for confidence, he doesn’t look like he knows what he’s doing there. The system – they’re playing the three at the back, I don’t know if he’s good enough or if he wants to play in that position.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Tottenham were poor defensively in both games last week so neither of the defeats were entirely surprising. That is the first part that needs to improve if the team’s form is to turn around. There are enough games left to mount a strong end to the season, but something different has to happen quickly.
