Pundit describes striker as a ‘no-brainer’ signing for Spurs this summer

Ex-Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has stated that Danny Ings would be the ‘perfect’ back-up striker to Harry Kane for Spurs (Football Insider).

The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported in July that the Southampton striker had turned down a lucrative new contract offer to remain on the South Coast.

The 29-year-old held lengthy negotiations to extend his existing terms, which are due to expire next summer in 2022. Southampton presented a new and improved four-year deal that would have made Ings the best-paid player in the club’s history.

However, the striker rejected the offer as he has intentions of joining a team competing towards the top of the table, either this summer or next.

If Southampton want to get some money from their star man, they will have to sell him this summer or in the January transfer window.

The Telegraph reported this month that Ings is Tottenham’s top summer transfer target as Nuno wants to switch to a two-man attack in North London.

Agbonlahor said this about Ings coming to Spurs: “I think it’s a no-brainer for Spurs.

“They have been crying out for a player like Ings. We’ve seen them struggle with backup strikers. Ings would be a perfect backup striker but one who can play as a number 10 and start as well, not just sit on the bench.

“He can create solutions for the manager with different formations. He can play anywhere along the front three.

“Nuno Espirito Santo likes to play the five at the back so Ings and Kane would be perfect for that formation.

“For me, it’s a no-brainer. Ings doesn’t want to sign a new contract at Southampton so I can see it’s happening, yes.”

Danny Ings’ contract situation is one that will raise a lot of eyebrows across the Premier League. If the rumours are true about Nuno wanting to switch a two-man attack, I wouldn’t look any further than Ings.

He has proven himself in the Premier League and is more than a goalscorer – he links up play and works hard pressing from the front too.
