Pundit explains how Spurs have given Liverpool and Aston Villa a little boost

Michael Owen thinks Tottenham Hotspur’s early season form and position at the top of the table has given other clubs hope that the title race could be more open this season.

Tottenham have begun the campaign in terrific form, with Ange Postecoglous side still unbeaten in the first eight games of the new Premier League season.

As we head into the international break, Spurs occupy the top spot in the league. The Lilywhites are level on points with London rivals Arsenal, but have scored more goals than the Gunners.

With Manchester City suffering back-to-back defeats, the reigning champions appear to be a little more vulnerable than in previous years. There is hope among the neutrals, then, that the title race this year could be more open.

Of course, there’s a long way to go, and it remains to be seen whether the likes of Heung-min Son and James Maddison can sustain their excellent form to carry Spurs into a title challenge.

Spurs could spark big Premier League title race

Speaking to Premier League Productions (08/10/23 at 6:25 pm), Michael Owen suggested Tottenham’s early season rise to the top of the league could inspire other teams to fight for the title this year.

He said: “Spurs have been one of the stories of the season, so far. I love the way they play. It has given everybody – Liverpool, Spurs, Aston Villa are up there now as well – it has given everybody a little bit of lift to say ‘okay, this could be a little open now’. Newcastle United are another team.

“So, it’s open. The Premier League is open after results like that. But it’s a marathon, not a sprint, as we know. Manchester City always get better and better throughout the season. But, at the moment, it’s looking really open.”

I’m not expecting us to win the league, or even to be around the title challenge come the end of the season, but if we can be in the conversation for a while longer that would be fun. The league desperately needs a more open race, and this year looks set to offer that.
