Pundit fears Spurs star will never be a top player despite £47m price tag

Simon Jordan believes that Brennan Johnson does not have the composure needed to become world-class while the former Crystal Palace owner was also not overly impressed with Tottenham’s decision to extend Timo Werner’s stay.

Rather than taking up the option to sign Werner permanently, Spurs have agreed a deal with RB Leipzig to extend his loan at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for a further 12 months.

The move has not gone down well with some Tottenham fans on social media, who see it as the club’s hierarchy once again settling for mediocrity rather than making statement signings.

Jordan insisted that he saw nothing from the German international over the last few months to suggest that he has got any better since his time at Chelsea.

When asked about Werner’s return to Spurs, the pundit told talkSPORT (29 May, 11 am): “My first reaction is he’s an honest player. He will give you his best. But he is a speedboat without a brain.

“He came (to England in 2020) with a reputation of being a goalscorer. But we saw what he was like at Chelsea. I didn’t see any material improvements at Tottenham.”

Brennan Johnson still needs to develop at Tottenham

One man who arrived at N17 with a lot more expectations than Werner is Johnson, with the Lilywhites shelling out £47m to sign him from Nottingham Forest last summer.

While the Wales international struggled at the start of the season, he improved as the campaign went on, finishing with 15 goal contributions in 2023-24, which is impressive for someone who was not a regular starter.

However, Jordan believes that like Werner, the 23-year-old also lacks that extra time and composure that world-class attackers possess.

He said: “Brennan Johnson is a work in progress. There are parts about Brennan Johnson that worry me, that he’s never going to be the full package.

“There is a composure that the top players have, to be able to stop themselves in a moment in get it out of their feet. He doesn’t seem to have that. Everything seems to be in a hurry. We’ll see if (he) can develop.”

Spurs Web Opinion

While Johnson is certainly not the finished product yet, his ceiling is very high and he showed enough glimpses of quality in his first season at the club for Spurs fans to be optimistic about what he can produce in the future. I expect the former Forest star to hit new heights in the upcoming season.
