Pundit hints 25-year-old made right decision by snubbing Spurs move in January

Steward Downing has claimed that Luis Diaz made the right decision by snubbing Tottenham’s approach in favour of a move to Liverpool in January.

At one point in the January transfer window, it seemed as though Spurs were set to snap up Diaz (The Guardian) but it was Liverpool who eventually won the race for the Colombian’s signature.

The Athletic later reported that Tottenham had agreed on a transfer fee with Porto for the wide man before the Reds swooped in to steal the 25-year-old from under Spurs’ noses.

The report added that the North London club’s hierarchy were not happy with the way Liverpool conducted themselves in the negotiations and that it could lead to a period of hostility between the two clubs.

After losing out on the Colombian, Spurs swopped for Dejan Kulusevski from Juventus and the Swede has made an excellent start to life in North London.

Downing has now applauded Diaz for making a ‘brave’ decision to join Jurgen Klopp’s men.

The former Liverpool winger told Goal: “A lot of clubs were chasing Diaz – I know Everton, Spurs, Leeds were all looking – but it couldn’t have turned out better for him, I don’t think. He’s got the best move and Liverpool have got a great player.

“Credit to him for coming and backing himself. A lot of players might have wondered if they’d play, but Diaz, just like Jota, has backed himself and look at the impact those two have had.”

In hindsight, Spurs will not be too disappointed at missing out on Diaz, given the impact that Kulusevski has made since his arrival. The fact that the Swede is four years younger than Diaz is also a huge plus as one would expect him to keep developing over the next few years.
