Pundit insists 25-year-old could be ‘the final piece of the jigsaw’ for Spurs

Kevin Phillips believes that Tottenham Hotspur fans will have plenty of reasons to be excited if the club completes a deal for Milan Skriniar, as the centre-half could be the final piece of Jose Mourinho’s jigsaw.

Tottenham are reportedly locked in negations with Inter Milan for Skriniar, with the centre-half said to be keen on joining the North Londoners.

However, the Inter Milan sporting director, Piero Ausilio, revealed this week that although meetings with Spurs took place, Skriniar is not for sale (DASN (26/10/20) as translated by SempreInter).

Phillips is not convinced by Tottenham’s options in central defence and believes that the Inter defender is exactly the type of player the Lilywhites need.

When asked about Tottenham’s pursuit of Skriniar, the former Sunderland striker told Football Insider: “It’s definitely an area that they need strengthening. Skriniar would be massive signing.

“I watched them against Southampton and defensively in the first half, they were all over the place. Southampton tore them apart.

“The pairing of Dier and Sanchez I just don’t see them as the long-term partnership, obviously Alderwield was on the bench. It’s certainly an area that needs addressing.”

Tottenham have already completed five signings this window, with reports revealing that two more could be set to follow before the transfer window closes.

Phillips admitted that the Lilywhites have addressed many of the weaknesses in their squad this transfer window and insisted that it can be an exciting season for Spurs if they manage to land a centre-half like Skriniar.

The pundit added: “They’ve brought in Reguilon at left-back so the left-back area has sorted itself out.

“So another centre-half, whether it’s the final piece of the jigsaw depends on who they can find to play alongside him.

“With Bale coming in, wow, it’s exciting times if I’m a Tottenham supporter.”

If we manage to complete deals for both Skriniar and a centre-forward before the window shuts, it can be argued that we have had one of the best windows in the whole of Europe. Our squad would look quite formidable on paper and there would be plenty of pressure on Jose Mourinho to get top four and win a trophy this season.
