Pundit is convinced Postecoglou will want to strengthen one area despite options

Paul Robinson believes that even though Tottenham Hotspur now have three top central defenders at their disposal, Ange Postecoglou will want to add one more centre-half to his squad in the summer.

Tottenham went large periods of the season without their two first-choice centre-backs this season, with both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero both spending time on the treatment table.

In their absence, Ben Davies and Emerson Royal slotted into the positions and delivered some admirable performances.

As many expected, Spurs strengthened the area in January with the acquisition of Radu Dragusin from Genoa, with the Romanian still waiting for his first start since arriving at Hotspur Way.

Despite the 22-year-old’s arrival, several outlets have suggested that the Lilywhites are still scouring the market for other centre-backs, with the likes of Bologna’s Riccardo Calafiori (GiveMeSport), Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite (Daily Mail) and Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly (TEAMtalk) mooted as targets.

Tottenham are expected to sign more defenders

Robinson is convinced that Spurs will look to add further reinforcements to their backline in the summer.

The former Tottenham goalkeeper told Football Fancast: “Davies is a great option to have because he can play as a centre-half as well. But that area, the back for, is something that I think he will look at.

“Dragusin’s a great signing. We haven’t seen anything of him, just coming off the bench, but the partnership of Romero and Van de Ven is clearly his first choice.

“If there is an injury or suspension in that area then Dragusin will come into that. So those three, if you’re going to go through a season, I think he will potentially add another for strength and depth next season.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Postecoglou’s and Tottenham’s stance on signing a centre-back could be influenced by Ashely Phillips’ performances at Plymouth.

While the Premier League is a completely different kettle of fish compared to the Championship, the centre-back is showing that he has the maturity needed to play a prominent first-team role at Spurs next season.
