Pundit is hopeful that 22-year-old will stay where he is despite Tottenham links

Former PSV Eindhoven star Danny Koevermans admitted that he is keen to see rumoured Tottenham target Santiago Gimenez stay in the Eredivisie for one more year.

Over recent weeks, it has been reported by a number of outlets that Tottenham are plotting a move for a marquee striker to fill Harry Kane’s shoes next summer (Football Insider).

One number nine who has been heavily linked with a move to Spurs over the last few months is Gimenez, with various publications suggesting that the Mexican international is at the top of Ange Postecoglou’s wishlist (The Mirror).

However, the 22-year-old has been going through a barren spell in front of goal over the last month and has come under a lot of criticism for some of his recent performances (Algemeen Dagbald via Soccer News).

Gimenez finally broke his recent goal drought on Thursday night, netting in the fifth minute in Feyenoord’s Europa League clash at the Stadio Olimpico. However, the goal was not enough to keep the Dutch side in the competition as the Giallorossi progressed to the next round on penalties.

Should Tottenham move for Santiago Gimenez?

Koevermans insisted that Gimenez’s quality is undeniable despite his recent struggles, admitting that he is hoping that the centre-forward stays put at De Kuip for one more season.

He told Voetbal Nieuws about the rumoured Spurs target: “Just set him up. If he doesn’t score in the next game, he’ll score in the one after. He is an exceptional striker. He remains a very nice striker to watch. And I hope for Dutch football that he stays in the Netherlands for another year.”

It looks inevitable that Gimenez will leave Rotterdam in the summer as several clubs from around Europe will likely vie for his signature. However, Feyenoord may perhaps not be able to get the £50m-plus they would have hoped for unless the 22-year-old has a strong end to the season.
