Pundit labels manager as ‘the one’ to replace Conte at Spurs – Not Pochettino

Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed that Thomas Tuchel is the manager that Tottenham should hire to replace Antonio Conte in the summer.

Multiple outlets have reported over the last couple of weeks that Tuchel is one of the names on Tottenham’s shortlist to take over from Antonio Conte at the end of the season (The Athletic).

It emerged recently that the German coach, who has been without work since parting ways with Chelsea back in August, wants his next job to be in the Premier League (The Guardian).

However, Ben Jacobs told TEAMtalk a couple of days ago that while the Tottenham hierarchy rate Tuchel highly, they do not see him as a good fit for the kind of project they wish to undertake at the club.

It emerged earlier this week that Marco Silva is one of the candidates that the North London club are eyeing, with the Portuguese coach said to be stalling on signing a new deal at Craven Cottage amidst Spurs’ interest (90 min).

However, Agbonlahor believes that Silva might not be able to cope with the increased expectations at a club like Tottenham, opining that Tuchel would be the best man for the job.

The former Aston Villa striker told Football Insider: “They’ve got to be so careful. We’re hearing all about Pochettino, Tuchel, and now Silva. For me, it’s got to be Tuchel. He’s the one.

“Silva has done well this season but he’s got to show it over more than one season before gets a big job like this.

“He’s done outstanding this season but it’s a big step up to a club like Spurs with the expectations they have. They need trophies now.

“The squad they’ve got isn’t getting any younger – and the best available manager is Thomas Tuchel.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Given that the appointment of big-name managers has failed over the last few years, I suspect that the Spurs hierarchy will look to go back towards a project manager in the summer rather than someone like Tuchel, who like Mourinho and Conte, would be focused on achieving instant success rather than building for the future.
