Pundit makes Joe Rodon claim that may excite some Tottenham supporters

Sky Sports pundit Andy Hinchcliffe has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur target Joe Rodon has elements of both John Terry and Rio Ferdinand in his game.

There has been plenty of speculation about Tottenham’s pursuit of the central defender this month. The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare claimed on Tuesday that Spurs expect to complete a deal for the 22-year-old before Friday’s domestic transfer deadline.

He claimed that the Lilywhites were hopeful of getting a deal over the line for a few million more than the £7million they initially had in mind.

The Daily Telegraph’s Mike McGrath has since reported that Swansea are in talks to sign Manchester defender Joel Latibeaudiere on a season-long loan, with some Spurs fans hoping that that could pave the way for the club to snap up Rodon.

Hinchcliffe believes that the youngster has all the attributes to become a top defender in the future. The former Everton defender told Sky Sports: “He’s right up there in terms of position for his age.

“I think what you tend to do with young centre-halves is look at the greats of the Premier League. You look at Rio Ferdinand and John Terry and there are elements of both in Rodon’s game.

“What I want from a centre-half is someone who loves to defend. Yes, they can play, but they don’t just like defending, they really want to defend – they want to get in the line of fire, they want to stop the opposition scoring.

“That’s what we see with Rodon. When the ball is there to be won, he wins it.”
