Following Cristian Romero’s performance against West Ham, Ashley Williams has insisted the Tottenham defender has similarities to Liverpool superstar Virgil van Dijk.
Although Romero has made a few unforced errors since returning from his hamstring injury, the centre-back seems to be getting better and better with each game he plays.
The Argentine marshalled Michail Antonio impressively and kept the Hammers forward quiet for the majority of the encounter on Sunday.
The 23-year-old tried to win every longball with typical full-blooded aggression and showed his composure in possession.
The former Atalanta man has built a solid partnership alongside Eric Dier and Ben Davies at the back, which has been the foundation to Tottenham’s improvements under Antonio Conte.
Williams waxed lyrical about Romero’s tenacity and bravery following his performance in the London derby on Sunday.
The former Swansea man insisted that the Spurs star’s quality in one-v-one situations and his upper-body strength reminds him of Van Dijk.

Williams told Match of the Day 2 on BBC One (10:48 pm, March 20, 2022): “He (Romero) is tough, he is solid, he is strong, he likes the battle, he does not shy away from it at all.
“He is brave enough to step in to try and win things in front.
“There are comparisons with Virgil van Dijk, upper-body strength, doesn’t get beat much in a one v one.”

Romero has the attributes necessary to evolve into a top centre-half but he is still quite raw. Conte probably realises that there are still some rough edges that need to be ironed out from the 23-year-old’s game.
While I would like to see him stop making needless challenges and picking up yellows, you also do not want to curtail his aggression as that is what makes Romero the player he is.
