Pundit names a number of players who are better than Eric Dier

Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has admitted that he has been left surprised by Gareth Southgate’s decision to name Eric Dier in his latest England squad.

The 27-year-old was named in the Three Lions squad for this month’s internationals against San Marino, Albania and Poland.

Dier has struggled with form over the past few months which has seen him lose his place in the Tottenham Hotspur side having been on the bench for their last five Premier League matches, with Jose Mourinho preferring to utilise Davinson Sanchez, Toby Alderweireld and even summer signing Joe Rodon (transfermarkt).

Agbonlahor claimed that Villa defender Ezri Konsa can feel hard done by not to have been named in the squad considering his impressive form this season.

Konsa has been a regular at the heart of Dean Smith’s defence this season with Agbonlahor believing that even the likes of Everton duo Ben Godfrey and Michael Keane along with Brighton’s Lewis Dunk are better players than Dier.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider: “For me, it’s very disappointing – he’ll be disappointed too,”

“Players like Konsa, Ben Godfrey, Michael Keane and Lewis Dunk are so unlucky to not make the squad because for me every single one of them is better than Eric Dier. It’s a shame they haven’t been selected.

“What’s more frustrating is that if you haven’t played for England before and you’re not in the last squad before the Euros I don’t think there’s much chance of making the Euros. I don’t think Southgate’s going to select somebody who hasn’t played for England before for the Euros – especially a defender, he might do it for an attacker.

“Konsa must be very disappointed. If I was him, I’d keep working hard and hopefully, he can get there one day.

“He’ll be looking at the performances of Eric Dier and be thinking ‘I’m playing a lot better than him.’”
