Pundit outlines two things Spurs must do to compete for Premier League title

Simon Jordan has claimed that Tottenham need to try and match the spending power of Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool if they are to seriously compete for the Premier League title.

The former Crystal Palace chairman was quizzed on what he believes Spurs need to do to compete with the aforementioned trio, as well as put themselves in regular contention for silverware.

Spurs have seen their fortunes altered by the appointment of Antonio Conte in November, with the Italian lifting the side to sixth in the Premier League – just two points outside the Champions League places.

With the January transfer window already underway, it is expected that Spurs will be busy throughout the month as they look to hand the former Inter Milan boss the best possible chance of completing the campaign on a strong note.

While Jordan believes the quality of Spurs’ recruitment of Conte is on a level par with the likes of Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel, he feels there needs to be an improvement in the spending department to make the team a truly competitive force.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Jordan said: “The aim has to be that Tottenham get in and amongst it. Get into the Champions League.

“Do they really believe in the fibre of their being that they can go and take on Man City and Chelsea to win Premier League titles? If they do, then they’ve got to do two things.

“They’ve got to match them economically and they’ve got to match them in the dugout. They’ve matched them in the dugout – that’s the first question answered.

“The second question is, ‘Are you going to go pound-for-pound with these guys’? Because they haven’t got mugs in their dugouts. They’ve got [Pep] Guardiola and Thomas Tuchel and [Jurgen Klopp] at Liverpool who is an elite manager as well.

“Those three guys are being matched by the resources in the dugout. Now you’re going to have to match them economically. Chelsea and Man City go pound-for-pound with anybody in the world.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Spurs are a way off the other three mentioned here, but Conte’s quality is a start as he can be on a level par with their managers. Liverpool are the only club comparable to Spurs when it comes to spending, whereas City and Chelsea are in their own league’s in that respect, which makes it a difficult thing to match.
