Pundit praises ‘very good’ Spurs youngster – Compares him to England starter

Stephen Warnock has praised the recent performances of Tottenham midfielder Oliver Skipp and sees similarities to West Ham’s Declan Rice in his game.

The 21-year-old has cemented a spot in the heart of the Spurs midfield and has thrived so far this season after having a successful campaign with Norwich City last term.

Skipp came up against his former employers on Sunday and produced a confident and stellar display to power Spurs to a much-needed 3-0 win at home.

The performance caught the eye of former Premier League defender Warnock, who was particularly impressed with the way the England U21 international used his time in possession.

He also compared Skipp’s style of play to that of West Ham star Rice, who has emerged as one of the division’s best central midfielders with the ball for both club and country.

Speaking on The Football Show, Warnock said: “He’s a good player. A very good player. He has all the attributes. He had that loan spell at Norwich, which Tottenham were delighted with because of the way he developed.

“We talk about Declan Rice and his ability to drive with the ball. When Skipp gets the ball in this position, the simple thing to do is, either pass it out wide or try and slip a ball through to Moura.

“So what is the next best thing to do? Bypass [Norwich’s] press and midfield. Then it’ll open up. And he has got that turn of pace. He has got that ability to drive with the ball.

“I thought he had a very good game. He doesn’t complicate things – they are moving the ball a lot slicker now and he is a part of that.”

Skipp has looked right at home in the Spurs midfield and many didn’t expect him to cement a permanent spot this quickly. While his ability in possession is obvious, he has surprised plenty of people with some of his attacking play, which can be a useful asset in his game going forward.
