Pundit predicts club ‘will be desperate’ to sign Spurs defender this summer

Alan Hutton has claimed that Celtic will be desperate to sign Cameron Carter-Vickers permanently in light of the centre-back’s performances this season.

Carter-Vickers has been a mainstay in the Bhoys backline since completing a loan move up North last summer, with the 24-year-old’s solid displays being a key reason behind the Scottish side’s impressive defensive record this campaign.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have the option of signing the Tottenham centre-back permanently for £6m and reports indicate they are working to seal the deal ahead of the summer transfer window (The Daily Record).

However, the USA international’s displays have allegedly alerted several Premier League clubs, with the likes of Leicester, West Ham, Wolves, Burnley and Watford said to be monitoring his progress up north (TEAMtalk).

Hutton stated it will not prove easy for Celtic to win the race for Carter-Vickers’ signature but insisted the Glasgow giants need to snap up the defender if they are to keep progressing.

The former Spurs and Rangers right-back told Football Insider: “I think Celtic will be desperate to tie him (Carter-Vickers) down this summer. He’s come in and shown his quality.

“There were question marks over him when he came in, and I was among those not sure about him. But fair play to him, he’s come in and had a run of games. He looks confident.

“However, I do think there will be other teams watching him and making enquiries to Tottenham about what sort of fee they would be after.

“I don’t think the £6million fee, especially if Celtic get into the Champions League, will be out of their budget.

“If you are to move forward and keep progressing, they will want to keep hold of an asset like him.”

Carter-Vickers is at an age where he needs to settle down at a club and I suspect he will want to continue at Celtic given the way things have gone for him at Parkhead.

However, interest from Premier League sides could certainly turn the 24-year-old’s head, especially if he has ambitions of getting back into the USA squad ahead of the Qatar World Cup.
