Pundit predicts Mourinho could look to sign star he ‘liked’ at Spurs

Paul Stewart has claimed that Eric Dier could thrive in the Serie A amidst reports that Jose Mourinho may look to take the Tottenham star to AS Roma this summer.

All of Tottenham’s senior centre-backs struggled for consistency last season and it thus comes as no surprise that Fabio Paratici is reportedly prioritising strengthening in the position this summer.

Toby Alderweield has been linked with a return to the Eredivisie while Davinson Sanchez is allegedly a target for Sevilla.

If reports from Italy are to be believed, Mourinho is not prepared to take no for an answer in his pursuit of Dier, with the Giallorossi prepared to test Tottenham’s resolve.

However, Tottenham are expected to rebuff any offers they receive for the England international this summer.

Nuno Espirito Sato got his first look at Dier in action in Spurs’ pre-season opener against Leyton Orient on Saturday, with the centre-back wearing the captain’s armband in Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris’ absences.

Stewart admitted that he would not be surprised if Mourinho looks to take the Spurs defender to the Italian capital.

When asked about the speculation linking Dier with a move to Roma, the former Tottenham forward told ThisIsFutbol: “Jose might come in for him because he liked him.

“He might suit Italian football, because there’s not the intense pressure of the Premier League.

“So if Jose thinks he can do a job, that’s not beyond the realms of possibility, in my opinion.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Most Spurs fans will likely be happy to see the back of Dier on the back of his struggles last season. However, I believe the 27-year-old is likely to stay over both Sanchez and Alderweireld. I expect the former Sporting Lisbon man given one last chance under Nuno next season.
