Pundit questions why Kane would sign new Spurs deal until Conte extends his

Tim Sherwood believes that Tottenham Hotspur soon must make a decision on Antonio Conte’s future at the club with the Italian set to be out of contract at the end of the season.

Sherwood questioned why the likes of Harry Kane would look to commit their futures to the club while there is still uncertainty over the manager’s long-term future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Kane was heavily linked with a move to Manchester City last season and is set to be out o contract in the summer of 2024.

Conte signed a deal until next summer when he took over from Nuno Espirito Santo last November, which includes the option for Tottenham to extend.

Football.London previously reported last month that Spurs are able to trigger the option of the twelve-month extension at any time they wish, however it does not give assurances over the longer term.

Sherwood told Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday show on their Premier League TV channel (22/10/22 – 14:05) as covered by Football Daily: “He has only got until the end of the season, I mean he has not signed a new contract.

“Asking Harry Kane, Son and that to extend their contracts, why would you extend your contract if you believe in this manager and this manager is only going to be there until the end of the season.

“They have to make a decision on him [Conte] very soon and like Jeff [Stelling] said, there is speculation about him going back to Italy and he is lauded in Italy because of the style of how he wants to play.”

Tottenham are likely to want to discuss Conte’s future during the World Cup break next month and the pressure will be on Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici to ensure that the Italian receives the reassurances that he will want to hear that the club are prepared to spend to close the gap on the ‘monsters’ in the league.
