Pundit questions why Tottenham did not sign one of two Southampton stars

Tim Sherwood has claimed that Tottenham should have signed either James Ward-Prowse or Oriol Romeu from Southampton in January.

Tottenham sold Dele Alli to Everton while allowing Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso and Bryan Gil to join Lyon, Villareal and Valencia on loan respectively in the January transfer window.

Antonio Conte’s men brought in Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus on transfer deadline day.

Both of Spurs’ signings have hit the ground running in North London, with Kulusevski proving a potent goal threat alongside Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, while Bentancur has added composure to the Lilywhites’ midfield.

However, Tottenham have struggled for consistency since the transfer window closed, with impressive wins often being followed by unexpected losses.

Sherwood believes it is Spurs’ midfield department that is the problem and suggested it would have made a lot of sense for his former club to raid Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side for either Ward-Prowse or Romeu.

The former Tottenham interim head coach said on Sky Sports News (1:17 pm, March 5, 2022): “We had this conversation like three weeks ago after the window.

“They could have signed Ward-Prowse or Romeu at Southampton, better than the midfielders that Tottenham have, but not sexy enough.”

Spurs Web Opinion

We do have issues to address in central midfield in the summer, although I do believe our issues have been exaggerated by the absence of Skipp. I doubt Southampton would have been willing to let Ward-Prowse leave mid-season and I do not think Romeu would be an upgrade on the likes of Hojbjerg or Winks.
