Pundit reveals the Spurs man who has been a ‘surprise’ success under Conte

Jamie Redknapp has praised Ben Davies for his performance in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup win over West Ham and has been impressed with his performances in general since Antonio Conte’s arrival.

The 28-year-old played a key role on the way to Tottenham securing a 2-1 win, which helped book their place in the semi-finals, setting up a date with Conte’s former side Chelsea.

Since the Italian was appointed as the club’s manager, he quickly shifted the side’s formation into his preferred back three.

With Sergio Reguilon being Conte’s go-to option at left wing-back, Davies has occupied a spot at left centre-back, which is a position the Wales international has excelled in for his country in the past.

Former Spurs midfielder and current pundit Redknapp has been surprised with Davies’ improvement under Conte and believes he put in a performance good enough for Man of the Match in the midweek win over West Ham.

He told Sky Sports 1 (December 22, 2021, at 21:45 onwards): “Players surprise you. Sometimes, you come to a club and he maybe looked at, as a good example, Ben Davies, before he came.

“Would anyone have guessed that he would have played nearly all his games? And he has been fantastic.

“Today, arguably, Man of the Match. He knows the game. He knows the position. Back three, it might just suit him.”

Conte has improved quite a few players since arriving at Spurs, but Davies appears to be topping the list at the present time. He has transitioned well into the back three, but it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise given he has done well there on the international stage for Wales.
