Pundit says Maddison should have asked one important question to Spurs

Alan Shearer has said that James Maddison should have sought assurances that Harry Kane will remain at Tottenham Hotspur before signing for the North London club.

Maddison now looks set to be Tottenham’s third signing of the summer transfer window following the arrival of Guglielmo Vicario and the permanent deal for Dejan Kulusevski.

The attacking midfielder is expected to soon complete a medical at Hotspur Way before signing on the dotted line after Spurs agreed a £40m deal with Leicester City for the 26-year-old (Evening Standard).

Meanwhile, there remains a question mark over Kane’s future at Tottenham, with Bayern Munich expected to test Daniel Levy’s resolve with a second offer (Ben Jacobs) after their opening offer of £60m plus add-ons for the centre-forward was turned down (Sky Sports).

Some publications over the last 24 hours have indicated that Spurs would be willing to sell Kane to Bayern for the right price in order to ensure the striker does not join a Premier League rival on a free transfer next summer (Telegraph).

Maddison should have asked for Kane guarantee

Shearer has said that if he was in Maddison’s position, he would have asked for clarity on the England captain’s future.

The Newcastle legend wrote in his column for The Athletic: “My first thought when hearing about Bayern’s bid for Harry shot in the direction of James Maddison, who has been the subject of negotiations between Spurs and Leicester City, his present club.

“If I was Maddison, once I’d got personal terms out of the way, the first thing I’d be asking of Tottenham is assurances that Kane isn’t leaving.”

It will be interesting to know if Maddison’s representatives did seek those sorts of assurances about Kane’s future.

It is worth pointing out that not too many top sides were in for the attacking midfielder this summer.

So perhaps he was not in a position to make demands or ask for guarantees.
