Pundit says one player has been an even better signing than Micky van de Ven this year

Ally McCoist says Chelsea’s Cole Palmer has been the signing of the season across the Premier League but he did give Micky van de Ven an honourable mention.

Most Spurs fans were unsure what to make of the Van de Ven signing when the Dutchman arrived through the door last summer.

The 22-year-old signed for the Lilywhites on the back of just one season of regular football under his belt in the Bundesliga and some Tottenham supporters saw it as the club settling for the cheaper option rather than securing Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba.

However, Van de Ven has not only managed to win over the fan base over the past eight months but the Netherlands international is now starting to be recognised by the media and opposition fans as one of the best centre-halves in the Premier League.

Is Micky Van de Ven the signing of the season?

The Tottenham star was one of four names mentioned by McCoist when he was asked to name the signing of the season but the pundit insisted that Palmer was a pretty easy choice in the end.

He told talkSPORT (16/04/24): “Let’s be honest about it, not that I’m saying competition isn’t fierce, but I think he is out on his own.

“What else have we got? Micky van de Ven, who Saturday aside, has had an excellent season. He has missed a good bit of it through injury but he has been terrific. Declan Rice has been fantastic. Mac Allister at Liverpool is having a very good season. But dear me, Cole Palmer.”

Spurs Web Opinion

One can understand why McCoist has gone for Palmer over Van de Ven, with attacking players always tending to get recognised more than defenders when picking a player of the season or the signing of the season.

However, there is no doubt that Tottenham have a special player on their hands, with the Dutchman looking destined to become one of the best centre-backs in the world over the next year or two.
