Pundit says Tottenham player ‘won’t be sweating’ over national selection

Chris Sutton has said that James Maddison made a decent impact on the game when he came on against Liverpool in the second half and insisted that the attacking midfielder will not be nervous about his place in the England squad.

Maddison’s form has gone down a cliff over the last couple of months, with the 27-year-old struggling to be anywhere close to the same creative force that he was during the start of the campaign.

Ange Postecoglou made the tough decision to leave the former Leicester City man out of the starting eleven for the Lilywhites’ last two matches, something which would have been unthinkable just months ago.

A couple of weeks ago, Alan Shearer even insisted in The Rest Is Football podcast that the Spurs star might end up missing out on the England squad that will travel to the European Championship this summer.

Maddison is still expected to go to the Euros with England

Sutton believes that Postecoglou was right to leave Maddison out of the starting eleven but insisted that the midfielder would not be sweating about his place in the England squad since all nations are allowed to name a 26-man squad.

The former Celtic striker said on It’s All Kicking Off Podcast: “That’s why he won’t be sweating [the 26-man squad rule]. I think so [sweating on his form] but we had the Mo Salah debate about whether it was right to drop him. I don’t think any player, you say you were surprised he was dropped, I don’t think any Spurs fan was surprised.

“I don’t think any player has a divine right to play. Form dips and his form has dipped. But he actually came on and it was a good response from him. He didn’t come and sulk around and throw his toys out of the pram he actually made a difference. But he’ll be going to Germany I’m pretty sure of that.”

I do not think Southgate will consider leaving Maddison out of the squad as the 27-year-old offers something different to his other attacking midfield options. However, given the form of Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham this season, the Spurs star is unlikely to get any starts at the Euros.
