Pundit says two players should not be starting for Tottenham if they want to win things

Gabby Agbonlahor has said that the likes of Brennan Johnson and Timo Werner should not be starters at Tottenham Hotspur if the North London club have aspirations of challenging the best teams in the Premier League.

After last week’s 4-0 win at Aston Villa, Tottenham fans were understandably on a high and there was a lot of optimism about what lies ahead in the future.

However, the Lilywhites were brought crashing down to earth by Fulham on Saturday, with the Cottagers serving a major reality check to Ange Postecoglou’s men regarding how far they still have to go.

Following the shock 3-0 loss at Craven Cottage, there has been an inquest among the Spurs fan base on just where the side needs to improve if they are to kick on and challenge the top three.

Werner and Johnson come under fire

Agbonlahor believes that Tottenham still have some glaring weaknesses in the attacking areas, opining that neither Johnson nor Werner should be starting for any club with grand ambitions.

The former Villa striker told talkSPORT (8:09 pm, March 16, 2024): “Similar to Werner, sometimes Mudryk as well. Sometimes when you get these quick players, they can make the wrong choice at the wrong time.

“Like I said earlier, a couple of weeks ago, Johnson and Werner shouldn’t be starting for a team that want to be fighting for the league title, if Spurs want to do that. They should be players on the bench to come on. He should have, like, Kulusevski on the right, Son on the left and a top number 9 upfront.”

I think it is fair to argue that Werner should not be a regular starter for a side with title ambitions As things stand, the German is not guaranteed a place in the side when everyone is fit.

However, it is harsh to paint Johnson with the same brush as he is only 22 years of age and has a high ceiling. While the Welshman is still raw and needs to iron out some rough edges from his game, that will only happen if he gets minutes under his belt.
