Pundit suggests 25-year-old Spurs star may not be physical enough for Conte

Alex McLeish has suggested that Antonio Conte could be looking to replace Sergio Reguilon with a more physically imposing left-back in the summer.

Reguilon had lost his place in Tottenham’s starting eleven in previous months with Conte preferring Ryan Sessegnon to the Spaniard.

The 25-year-old has been back in the Spurs lineup over the last few weeks due to Sessegnon’s injury but he has not set the world alight with his performances.

Football Insider reported earlier this week that Conte is not convinced by Reguilon and wants to upgrade on the left wing-back role in the summer.

The report added that the Italian had given the green light for Tottenham to cash in on the Spain international and reinvest the money into new signings.

McLeish has admitted that he is not surprised by the news, insisting there are better left-backs out that than the Tottenham man.

The former Aston Villa boss suggested that Reguilon’s lack of physicality might be an issue for Conte.

When asked about the speculation regarding Reguilon’s future, McLeish told Football Insider: “I wasn’t sure about him. I saw him at the weekend and I do feel there are better left-backs out there.

“Reguilon had a good game. There were a few times where he got forward.

“He’s not the biggest in the world, is he? I might be doing him a disservice. When you’re talking about defensive height and stature, possibly Conte’s thinking that way.

“Mourinho didn’t like anybody in his back four less than six foot two. It could be something as simple as that.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think Reguilon’s defensive ability is an issue. In fact, I have been surprised with how good the Spaniard has been defensively since he arrived.

However, the jury is out on whether the 25-year-old offers enough going forward to play as a wing-back.

He does not seem capable of beating players in one vs one situations and despite possessing a very good left-foot, he seems to lack composure in the final third.
