Pundit suggests Conte may have made a mistake regarding Spurs defender

Clinton Morrison has pointed to Djed Spence’s performances at Rennes as evidence that the right-back could have come in handy for Tottenham.

There was plenty of excitement among Spurs fans when Spence arrived at the club last summer on the back of an outstanding breakthrough season on loan at Nottingham Forest in the Championship.

However, the 22-year-old did not start a single game for the Lilywhites in the first half of the season and was eventually loaned out to Rennes in January to make way for new big-money signing, Pedro Porro.

After a sluggish start to his spell in France, Spence has been getting rave reviews for his displays for the Ligue 1 club over recent weeks (Stade Rennais Online), with the on-loan Tottenham man establishing himself as a mainstay in Bruno Genesio’s starting eleven.

Morrison believes that the former Middlesbrough man has shown since his move in January that he is defensively good enough to play in the Premier League.

The pundit told Sky Sports News – 01/04, 12:11: “We know Djed Spence probably wasn’t (fancied by Conte) because he said to him, ‘I can’t see you playing in this team’.

“And he’s gone on loan now to Rennes and I know it’s a different league, but he’s pulling up trees over there. He’s been outstanding.

“I saw him play the other day against Mbappe, he was magnificent against Mbappe. He’s a good defender.”

Tottenham might be sorted in the right-back position for a long time to come, with both Pedro Porro and Spence having the potential to develop into top-class players.

However, both players appear better suited to playing as wing-backs rather than as full-backs, and they might be hoping that whoever replaces Conte, plays with a back three.
