Pundit suggests Daniel Levy should not be branding Harry Kane a ‘legend’

According to talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan, Tottenham Hotspur chairman, Daniel Levy, should not be calling Harry Kane a legend, while adding that the striker is partly to blame for his own lack of silverware.

Kane is enjoying a brilliant campaign on an individual level this season, with 25 goals in all competitions (Transfermarkt) despite Tottenham’s frustrating results.

This year alone, Kane has become Tottenham’s all-time leading goalscorer (GOAL), and broken Wayne Rooney’s record as England’s all-time top goalscorer, too.

The club’s inability to put together a consistent run of form means Spurs and Kane will once again end the season empty-handed.

With this in mind, the rumour mill is in full swing, suggesting Kane will be on the move in the summer.

Manchester United and Bayern Munich have now been joined by Real Madrid and PSG among the possible suitors for the England captain (Daily Mail).

Tottenham fans would be disappointed to see their talismanic striker leave the club and many would also regard Kane as a legend, including chairman Daniel Levy (Cambridge University).

However, Simon Jordan told talkSPORT he doesn’t agree with that label for Kane, and blamed the player for his lack of trophies.

He said: “As a commercial animal who looks at the football club in a certain way, I don’t like banding around terms like ‘legend’.

“I’ll let the fans do that or let the media do that. I think when the owner starts doing it you fall into the scenario of trying to please people because Daniel will view Harry Kane in a certain way where he’s there to do a job.

“He’s the captain of the side, whether he believes he’s a good leader or not, I don’t know but he’s the captain of the side and with that in mind those are playing to the gallery sort of comments.

“I wouldn’t be sat there talking about my players as ‘legends’, I’d be saying they’ve been absolutely fantastic for the football club, I’ve looked after them, they’ve looked after me and long may it continue.”

Jordan continued: “The bottom line is Daniel is talking in soundbites, talking platitudes about how he wants Harry Kane to be successful for his football team. Legend status, OK, if that’s part of Daniel’s belief system, then fine.

“But I think primarily Kane is part of a team that has been unsuccessful, and he has been a contributing factor to that as well. Because there have been big games in big times when Harry Kane has been non-visible.”

While Jordan is correct about Kane sometimes struggling in big games and the club in general being unsuccessful in recent years, I don’t think you can deny Kane’s status as a legend after the records he has broken for both club and country.

I also don’t see the problem in a chairman recognising that contribution from a player.

Also, just to clarify, Harry Kane is not Spurs’ club captain so we’re not sure why Jordan brought that up.
