Pundit suggests one Spurs player who could be sold in Conte summer shake up

Noel Whelan has hinted Harry Winks could be one of the players to make way in a ‘shake-up’ of the Tottenham squad under Antonio Conte this summer.

Conte, despite being immersed in a race for a top-four spot in the Premier League, is likely to be creating plans for his first summer transfer window in charge of the club.

The 52-year-old has reportedly noted that he needs up to six new signings this summer in order to build a squad good enough to cope with the demands of domestic and European competitions simultaneously (Telegraph).

Part of the reshuffle at Spurs began during the January transfer window with the arrival of Juventus pair Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur, while Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso and Bryan Gil departed on loan and Dele Alli was sold.

Whelan believes Conte will continue his overhaul this summer and claims out-of-favour midfielder Winks will be the first player to leave and pave the way for more exits and then incomings.

He told Football Insider: “He’s got rid of Dele Alli, he’s got players out in that winter transfer window.

“It’s going to be a shake-up because you can’t afford to bring in six and keep everyone. I think if you’ve gone out on loan, then you’re out on loan for a reason. That’s unless you’re a really young player getting experience.

“Conte will want to trim the squad, bring in his own people, he’s not had a summer transfer window yet. He’s only had a winter one, which is difficult, and the two players brought in have made a difference.

“Conte’s still probably learning and figuring out himself who needs to be at the football club. He’s had enough opportunities during the bad times of European football.

“The nights we’ve seen that second string have a chance to prove themselves, they’ve been very unsuccessful. Harry Winks is probably one out there that he’s questioning whether he needs to keep.

“To give him the six players and the money is vital for how successful Tottenham will be next year. There have got to be outs, absolutely.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The overhaul at Spurs has been needed for quite a while and it started briefly in January, even though most of the outgoings were loans.

But players such as Winks, who are not in regular contention, should be the ones that are transfer-listed as they have essentially run their course at Spurs.
