Pundit thinks one Tottenham youngster ‘can become the GOAT’ in the coming years

Former Sweden international Martin Aslund thinks Lucas Bergvall has the potential to develop into one of the best in the world but he suggests that the midfielder made a mistake by joining a big club like Tottenham so early in his career.

There is plenty of excitement back in Sweden about Bergvall, with the youngster being seen by many as the next potential breakout start from the Scandinavian country.

Despite being just 18 years of age, the young midfielder is regularly dominating matches for Djurgardens and has taken the Allsvenskan by storm, having already broken into the national side.

The teenager will link up with the Tottenham squad ahead of the start of next season and Spurs fans will be hoping that he can go on to fulfil his potential under the watchful eyes of Ange Postecoglou.

It has been reported by some sources that Bergvall is expected to be handed a prominent first-team role at the North London club next season (Football Insider).

The teenager was recently even named by Goal.com in their NXGN list of the 50 best wonderkids in the world born after January 1, 2005.

Can Lucas Bergvall shine in the Premier League?

While Aslund does not doubt Bergvall’s potential, he suggested that the Swede will find it quite difficult to break into the Spurs side and that the switch to the Premier League club might not be ideal for his development.

When asked about the young midfielder, the 47-year-old Nyheter 24 (as translated by Sport Witness): “I think he will be a very good national team player. I think he ends up in a top team in the Benelux and there he can become the GOAT [Greatest of all time].

“Will he replace James Maddison at Tottenham? I hope I’m wrong and that he does, but I don’t think so. People take what I say the wrong way, Lucas is an incredible footballer.

“If you see how Bergvall plays football, he is an opportunist, he often does the difficult things. If you’re going to play in the Premier League and have that role, you have to check which other players have it, how many Swedish players have that role?

“There are extremely few, so then Lucas Bergvall must become one of the best players in Swedish history. Am I sure he will be? No, I don’t think so.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Postecoglou has shown already that he is willing to give opportunities to young players if they are good enough, with the Australian trusting the likes of Pape Sarr and Destiny Udogie from day one.

So there is no reason why Bergvall would not have a prominent role at Spurs next season. If the teenager is not ready, the club would likely send him out on loan to the Championship in January so he can continue playing regularly.
